"A spus că familia ta are active ascunse legate de Halcyon."

"Așa că ai rămas."

Expresia i s-a înăsprit.

Jessica l-a privit tăios.

Brendan nu a spus nimic.

Acesta a fost răspunsul suficient.

Deodată, umilința Jessicăi s-a transformat în furie.

"M-ai folosit ca să o faci geloasă?"

"Nu a fost așa."

"Mi-ai spus că căsnicia ta e moartă."

"A fost."

"Mi-ai spus că te-a prins cu sarcina."

Mâna mi s-a strâns peste stomac.

Diane s-a întors.

Vehicule de poliție sosiseră afară.

Richard s-a ridicat brusc.

"Nu."

Arthur a adunat documentele.

Marcus noticed.

Two security officers blocked the exit.

Diane began to cry.

The sound was startling, not because it was loud but because it was so perfectly controlled. Even her tears seemed designed for an audience.

“Cassidy,” she whispered. “Think about your daughter. Brendan is still her father.”

I looked at my ex-husband.

He stood beside Jessica, though neither of them seemed aware of the other anymore.

His face held fear, anger, and something close to grief.

But I knew Brendan.

He grieved losses, not people.

“My daughter deserves a father who does not treat love like leverage,” I said.

He flinched.

Then his expression changed.

A small, ugly smile appeared.

“You are so certain she is mine.”

The room went silent.

The pain in my stomach sharpened.

“What did you say?”

Brendan’s smile widened, though fear shook beneath it.

“You heard me.”

Arthur stepped between us.

“That is enough.”

“No,” Brendan said. “She wants truth? Let’s give her all of it.”

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope.

“I found this in her medical file.”

My blood went cold.

He tossed it onto the table.

The envelope slid through the spilled water and stopped near my hand.

A clinic logo was printed in the corner.

The fertility clinic I had visited before my mother died.

Before I met Brendan.

Before my marriage.

I stared at it.

I had frozen embryos years ago because genetic testing revealed a condition that could affect my ability to carry a child later. After Brendan and I struggled to conceive, we had used one.

At least, that was what I believed.

Brendan looked at everyone in the room.

“She never told me the clinic flagged a chain-of-custody irregularity.”

I picked up the envelope.

My fingers trembled.

“That notice was resolved.”

“Was it?”

“The clinic confirmed the embryo belonged to us.”

“No,” Brendan said. “They confirmed the paperwork matched.”

Arthur took the envelope from me and scanned the letter.

His expression changed.

My heart began pounding so hard that I could hear it.

“What are you suggesting?” I asked.

Brendan’s gaze dropped to my stomach.

“I am suggesting that while you were hiding your empire from me, someone else may have hidden something from you.”

A doctor entered the room with a medical bag, followed by a paramedic.

“Mrs. Vale, we need to examine you now.”

I barely heard him.

Arthur turned another page.

Then he stopped.

“Cassidy.”

Something in his voice frightened me more than Brendan’s accusation.

“What?”

Arthur looked at the final line of the clinic report.

“This document has an authorization code.”

“So?”

He lifted his eyes.

“It belongs to a Halcyon executive account.”

Camera a devenit perfect liniștită.

L-am privit fix.

"A cui?"

Arthur nu a răspuns imediat.

Afară, ușile mașinii s-au trântit.

Agenți federali s-au apropiat de casă.

Richard a râs brusc.
