Asta e imposibil."
"A aparținut mamei mele."
Buzele i s-au deschis, dar nu a ieșit niciun cuvânt.
Diane s-a recuperat prima.
She stood so abruptly that her chair scraped backward.
“This is ridiculous. Halcyon’s owner is anonymous. Everyone knows that. It’s controlled through trusts and investment groups.”
“Yes,” I said. “My trusts. My investment groups.”
Richard Morrison entered from the hallway then, drawn by the commotion. He stopped at the edge of the dining room, his face already pale.
Unlike the others, Richard understood numbers.
He understood corporate structures.
And the moment he saw Marcus, the Halcyon folder, and me wrapped in a security jacket, he understood the truth before anyone explained it.
“Oh, God,” he whispered.
Brendan turned to him.
“Dad?”
Richard did not answer.
His phone rang.
Then Diane’s.
Then Brendan’s.
Then Nathan’s from somewhere upstairs.
Within seconds, the room filled with overlapping ringtones and vibrating devices.
Nobody reached for them at first.
Marcus opened the leather folder.
“Protocol 7 is a crisis-containment mechanism established by Chairwoman Vale following the attempted hostile takeover six years ago. It authorizes immediate suspension of employees, freezing of discretionary corporate benefits, emergency review of contracts, revocation of security clearance, and preservation of company property.”
He looked at Brendan.
“As of nine minutes ago, you were suspended without pay.”
Brendan’s face drained.
Marcus continued.
“Your corporate accounts have been frozen. Your company vehicle is being repossessed. Your access to all Halcyon facilities has been revoked. Your pending promotion has been canceled.”
“That promotion was approved,” Brendan said.
“By an executive committee controlled by Chairwoman Vale.”
Marcus turned to Diane.
“Your foundation appointment has been terminated. The villa in Tuscany used for foundation retreats is no longer available to you. Neither is the Fifth Avenue residence.”
Diane clutched the table.
“That residence was donated to the foundation by a private benefactor.”
I looked at her.
“I was the benefactor.”
Her eyes snapped toward me.
Marcus turned to Richard.
“Your authority over acquisitions has been suspended pending an internal audit.”
Richard closed his eyes.
That was the one that frightened him most.
Not losing the car.
Not losing the houses.
The audit.
I noticed the small movement in his jaw.
So did Marcus.
Brendan finally grabbed his phone.
He stared at the screen.
Seventeen missed calls.
Six emails marked urgent.
A notification from the bank.
Another from Human Resources.
Another from the executive office.
“This can’t be legal,” he muttered.
Arthur entered the house before I could answer.
He was still wearing the dark blue suit he had worn to a charity luncheon earlier that afternoon. Rain glistened on his shoulders. Two attorneys followed him, carrying document cases.
Arthur glanced at the water on the floor, then at me.
Something dangerous passed through his expression.
“Cassidy.”
“I’m fine.”
“You are visibly not fine.”
“The baby is moving.”
“That does not mean you are fine.”
His voice softened.
“Please let the doctor examine you.”
“In a minute.”
He knew better than to argue when I used that tone.
Arthur turned to Brendan.
For years, Brendan had described Arthur as “some older lawyer Cassidy occasionally did paperwork for.” Arthur had played along whenever their paths crossed, always calling me Ms. Morrison and never revealing that he reported directly to me.
Now he placed a thick document on the table.
“Mr. Morrison, this is a formal preservation notice. You are prohibited from destroying communications, financial records, company devices, or any material related to Halcyon business.”
Brendan stared at the document.
“I don’t understand.”
"Nu trebuie să înțelegi asta în seara asta," a spus Arthur. "Trebuie doar să o asculți."
Diane și-a regăsit vocea.
"Asta e nebunie. Cassidy, oprește asta imediat."
M-am întors spre ea.
Părea mai puțin puternică acum.
