Fără zâmbet, fără bărbia ridicată, fără certitudinea că toți cei din încăpere aparțineau sub ea, părea mai mică decât îmi aminteam.
Dar nu îmi pare rău.
Doar frică.
"Ai turnat apă murdară cu gheață peste o femeie însărcinată," a spus Arthur.
Nările lui Diane s-au dilatat.
"A fost o glumă."
"Nu," am răspuns. "A fost o demonstrație."
Ochii i s-au îngustat.
"De ce?"
"Despre cine ești când crezi că cineva nu are putere."
Fața i s-a încruntat.
Vocea i-a coborât.
"Tu ai plănuit asta."
"Nu."
“You hid who you were.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I did not answer immediately.
There had been a time when that question hurt.
Now it merely opened a door to an old room.
“I met Brendan at a hospital cafeteria,” I said. “My mother was dying upstairs. I had been awake for two days. I was wearing a sweatshirt and carrying a paper cup of coffee. He sat beside me and talked to me like I was ordinary.”
Brendan finally looked up.
I continued.
“He didn’t ask my last name. He didn’t search me online. He didn’t know what I owned. For the first time in my life, I believed someone wanted me without wanting access to my money.”
His expression twisted.
“I did want you.”
“Maybe, at first.”
“I married you.”
“And then you resented me.”
“You lied to me every day.”
“Yes.”
His voice rose.
“You let me struggle while you sat on billions!”
“I paid off your student loans.”
He froze.
“I covered your mother’s surgery through an anonymous medical foundation.”
Diane went rigid.
“I arranged Nathan’s position after he failed his final interview.”
Footsteps sounded from the staircase.
Nathan had come down. He stood near the doorway, phone in hand.
I turned toward Richard.
“I prevented your division from being dissolved after the Phoenix acquisition.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“And Brendan,” I said, “every promotion you received was earned until the last one. That one was not. You had begun altering performance reports, taking credit for your team’s work, and billing personal expenses to the company.”
Brendan’s face changed.
It was subtle.
But everyone saw it.
The outrage vanished.
Guilt replaced it.
Arthur’s gaze sharpened.
“What personal expenses?” Diane asked.
Brendan said nothing.
I looked at Jessica’s bracelet.
She followed my eyes and covered it with her hand.
“The bracelet,” I said. “The weekend in Aspen. The penthouse suite in Miami. The car service. The private dinners.”
Jessica turned on Brendan.
“You said those were executive benefits.”
“They were,” he snapped.
“No,” Arthur said. “They were theft.”
Diane’s hand flew to her throat.
“You stupid boy.”
Brendan stared at her.
“Don’t.”
“You risked everything for her?”
Jessica’s face flushed.
“For me?”
Diane pointed at her.
“You were supposed to improve his image, not destroy it.”
Silence fell.
Jessica looked from Diane to Brendan.
“What does that mean?”
Diane realized her mistake.
Brendan spoke quickly.
“She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
But Jessica stepped toward him.
“What does she mean, I was supposed to improve your image?”
No one answered.
Fața i s-a golit.
